Pass the Burger, Please

I gave up red meat almost 10 years ago, and the only thing I actually crave now and then is a burger. Luckily I think it’s just the whole meat/toppings/bun (and fries, obviously!) combo that I really want, so a turkey burger seems to do the trick. Plus, what’s summer without a BBQ?? So the other night we invited my parents over for dinner: Burgers (turkey for me and mom, cow for Brian and Dad), Alexia Garlic Parmesan Potato Wedges, and 2 recipes from Jenna’s Site (Eat, Live, Run)- Sweet and Sour Cabbage and Sweet and Spicy BBQ Beans (with Kale).

The Sweet and Sour Cabbage turned out really well! Having cooked with cabbage before, I anticipated a stinky house… but not so. Other than our usual delightful pug-and-cat scent, that is. I had some of the leftovers for lunch yesterday and actually thought it was better the 2nd day. It seemed to have absorbed more of the vinegar- always a good thing! Here it is on the stove:

The BBQ Beans were amazing. I’m not a big baked beans person, but these were delicious- the sauce is tangy and not too sweet, and the kale really bulks up the dish. It was super filling (and also good the 2nd day, I might add!).

So here’s my whole plate. The burgers were GIANT and we used the Ezekiel buns (which are huge) so I could barely eat the burger. I ended up kind of disassembling it…

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Alexia wedges. I probably should have cooked them longer- they were a little crunchy- but I expected more of a parmesan flavor. From now on I’ll probably stick with the standard Alexia fries (not wedges).

Oh, I can’t forget dessert: Blue Bell Key Lime Pie Ice Cream. It even had little pieces of graham cracker crust inside :)

So class yesterday was busy. We started on quickbreads and rolls, plus we had to bake off our pinwheel cookies from last week. Last night we made:

  • Yeast Rolls- knots
  • Biscuits- OMG, yum
  • French Bread
  • Banana Nut Muffins
  • Cinnamon Cocoa Swirl Cookies

The bakeshop smelled amazing… can’t beat the smell of fresh yeast bread. We also got to sample what bread baked without salt tastes like (NOT GOOD). Tonight is our first quiz so I’ll be studying up a little today!

Where did you buy that ice cream? It sounds delicious. I am going to check out the website.

Good question- Blue Bell is really easy to find here in TX (all grocery stores have it) because it’s made here, but I’m not who carries it out of state. I had a friend in college (we were in VA) that had the company ship a few gallons to her, so I guess you can order it online…?
