Oh, For The Love… July 15, 2008

Remember how excited I was about pies just, um, one short week ago? Oh, to be young and stupid again.  Seriously, I am so sick of pies right now that I want to scream. Here’s a short list of what sucks about making pies and tarts:

  1. You can’t “taste” the final product.  Unlike with cookies, muffins and doughnuts, you can’t exactly just grab one off the rack and pop it in your mouth.  Good for my butt, bad for my tummy.
  2. You only get one shot.  With smaller items, one danish may be a little wacky but you can make up for it with the rest.  Pies? Not so much. If you, say, jack up the top of your chocolate silk tart by not anchoring the parchment and then putting it in the convection oven, then you just have to live with it (sorry, group!).
  3. FINALLY- and I’ll stop whining after this- pies take forever to bake.  We haven’t gotten out of class before 10:15 in two weeks… which probably explains my crabiness right now.  That and the fact that our AC is still not fixed. The home warranty company has to order a new compressor so we’re homeless for at least another 48 hours.

Anyhow, I brought my camera to class tonight and took pictures of all of our goodies.  First off, the chocolate pecan pie- which was probably the one thing I made tonight that turned out as planned! Just one shot of Jack Daniels away from derby pie:

Second, a beautiful lemon meringue pie made by my group member (Bryan, if you’re reading this- my dad tried all of our stuff tonight and said that this was his favorite!):

And the chocolate silk tart… we made 2. This is the one without the convection injury:

A walnut tart with chocolate drizzle, made by the lovely Kerry:

Aaaand finally- because we’re in the South, y’all- sweet potato pie.  I had to pass on these, but they do look better than any sweet potato pie I’ve ever seen!

Tomorrow’s class: quiz and then eclairs, napoleons and palmiers. I’m sure there’s more but I don’t have my syllabus in front of me… you’ll just have to be surprised!

Okay, want to see something sad? So I was at my parents’ all day- just me and the dogs.  I assumed that Chloe was the laziest dog on the planet, but apparently I was mistaken.  Her two “aunts” are equally sloth-tastic.

Exhibit A- Sophie:

Oh, come on Annie, you’re like 4 months old! Eh, at least she bothered to lift her head for the shot:

And, of course, the master of all lethargic puglets… Chloe:

You know what’s great about dogs? You can take pictures of them sleeping and they’re not creeped out. Not that I would do that otherwise… but, you know…. it’s nice to have the option.  Right? Right??

Okay, that’s enough rambling for now. Night all!

PS- Oh! Oh! One more thing… this may only be exciting to me, but I bought the domain name www.heatherbakes.com.  So now you don’t have to spend the extra 5 seconds (or minutes, if you type like my dad) entering the wordpress part. Just type HeatherBakes.com into your browser and VOILA! Hooray.

Chloe is so cute!!! I have an Italian Greyhound, Otto, he is a member of the sloth squad as well. He spends his days buried under any blanket he can get is paws on, even when it is 90 plus degrees. Lovely pies!!! I posted about the bread - our first blog video, D is a superstar!!!

Congrats on the URL name! That’s a good feeling, isn’t it? I bought http://www.rosehuberonline.com for my online professional portfolio and then it just turned into a final project for one of my classes (oops..). I still plan to re-do it at some point.. I remember the moment I purchased though - I felt pretty good :)

Sammie- I have to admit that Chloe is really cute. She was a holy terror for the first year, but now she’s turned into a really sweet dog… it only took 4 short years :)

Rose- Thanks! The only problem is that now when I try to post comments on other people’s blogspot blogs, it tells me that I need to log into wordpress and won’t let me post… grr. I guess I just need to figure that part out. Computer genius I am not.

Otto crapped and lifted his leg everywhere for the first 5yrs. I was ready to kick him out but we love him and let him stay. We put him in jail when we are not home & at night. He actually likes being our criminal, we leave his cell open when he is not in lock down and he goes in there to hang out from time to time - I swear he likes his chamber of doom, plus it is a padded room to boot so if he starts going ape he won’t knock himself silly.
The bread machine I have is a Zojirushi, it is the best. I can make jam/ jelly and bake small cakes in it too. My main man bought it on-line if you have any questions about it just shoot me an e-mail (samantha.otoole@verion.net).

Hi, I just found your blog and love it. I think it’s awesome that you are going to culinary school - I would love to do that someday myself.

I just started my own blog and I hope you and your readers will come visit and feel free to comment.
