So I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty stoked that tomorrow is Friday… AND that it’s a three-day weekend… AND that my birthday is on Tuesday. You probably weren’t excited about that last part, huh? Well you should be. The big 2-7, folks. Bring on the grey hair (oooh, too late- that one started at 19) and SAS shoes. Hot.
As you know- and some of you so graciously pointed out- I slept in a bit this morning. After blogging and getting dressed for the day, it was pretty close to lunchtime so I had a mini-breakfast of an apple with peanut butter and a peach:

This afternoon my mom and I ran some errands (Pier 1, Kohl’s) and then headed to lunch at Sushi Axiom on Henderson. I love this place; Brian and eat lunch there all the time, and I was excited to take my mom. Well… I must be under a restaurant curse or something, because lunch was kind of a disaster. We were seated at the first booth and all was well until they brought out our appetizer:

The calamari tasted great, but all of a sudden our table was basically swarmed with these little black fruit fly-type bugs. There were two just hanging out at the end of the table, and at least 5 more flying around the food. Yeah, not good. We asked the waiter if there was an area of the restaurant that might be more bug-free, but he informed us that, “To be honest, no. We basically have an infestation right now. They’re all over the restaurant.”
Seriously. I can’t make this stuff up.
You don’t want to see that in any restaurant, and especially not in a sushi bar. Too much raw protein sitting around. We did end up moving a few booths back, away from the window, and the situation was a little better. The party next to us didn’t seem to have any bug problems either.
We ended up sticking it out. We both had the teriyaki bento- mine with chicken, hers with beef. Everything tasted good. Last time I ordered this they sliced the chicken, which would have been nice. It’s hard to eat a whole chicken tender with chopsticks.

I consoled myself afterwards with a yogurt from Natsumi. Original and pink guava swirl.

Spent the rest of the day running more errands (maternity store and Target), then headed to class. Wasn’t hungry for dinner beforehand so I had a bowl of Raisin Bran with trail mix.

Today we covered the dreaded basketweave cake. It actually wasn’t that bad at all, just tedious. My eyes were crossing by the end- so many little lines to pipe. The colors are a tribute to my senior year in college bedroom (Christina and Joy will remember). We lived in this cute little OLD house in Lexington, VA. I had a weird basement room with fake mirrored windows, and I painted the walls butter yellow and the trim kind of an apple green. I feel so sorry for whoever moved into that room after me. Anyway, here’s the cake. It’s a little shaky.

I also decorated a 1/4 sheet for giggles.

But more importantly, I mastered the flower petal!! Ah, small victories.

Okay, off to bed. I just looked down and realized that I’m basically covered in frosting… no wonder Chloe’s giving me so much attention.
-SURVEY-
What are you doing for Memorial Day weekend? I mean, other than anticipating my impending b-day, of course.
Class tomorrow night, kids birthday party to attend on Saturday, possibly Blue Mesa for brunch on Sunday (got a birthday coupon!). We might head up to the lake on Sunday afternoon because that’s what you do on Memorial Day, right? Then birthday dinner with the fam on either Sunday or Monday night. Whew.

We’re taking it easy this weekend. I can’t wait for the relaxation to begin.
Beautiful cakes, Heather!
My main question: Is that a real cake under the frosting and who gets to eat it and what do I have to do to get in line for a free cake?
You know you could just make and decorate your own B-Day cake…
Weekend plans are always by the minute. One minute I have them and the next minute I don’t..
Heather– my Grandma still refers to you as “the one with the cute bedroom.”
Heather, I loved your little dark cave of a room at Hook Lane! You definitely made the best of that hobbit hole.
Christina, I miss your Grandma stories! Maybe you should talk Grandma into starting up a blog–I’d definitely read it.
Joy (and Heather)-I made her read Heather’s blog. She read pages and pages of entries (with me doing the scolling down because she can’t master that). Her thoughts: “She can make anything sound interesting, even having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.”
I’m doing absolutely nothing and I am going to enjoy every minute of it!
Your cake looks gorgeous!
ewwww my friend works at sushi axiom. gross! i would have walked out.
nice petals!
Having a little dinner party Friday night. A tribute to Matt Martinez, all the recipes are his.
Happy Birthday weekend!
