Okay, not really. He wasn’t a knight when I married him. But tonight was Brian’s official initiation into the Knights of Columbus… which I think is awesome (possibly because I get to use the pool) and the kids I babysit think is freaking HILARIOUS: “When does he get his sword??”
I have no idea what this whole initiation entails, but he’s been gone since 7 so I’m picturing skulls and daggers and lots of candles. Do you think the Knights of Columbus haze?
This morning I decided to digress from the smoothie and settled on overnight oats:
- 1/2 Cup Plain Yogurt
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- 1/2 Cup Old Fashioned Oats
- Blueberries
- Sliced Almonds
- Granola
All drizzled with honey this morning:

Today I took the kids to Pump It Up, which is basically a giant building filled with moon bounces and all of this inflatable equipment that they can climb on. Why didn’t they have places like this when we were kids?? Though we used to spend literally EVERY DAY in the summer at Wet ‘N Wild. Ah, good times.
Lunch was very 3rd-grade-sack-lunch: roasted turkey and provolone on whole wheat with a sliced apple.

Since Brian was being “initiated,” I headed to dinner with my parents, Jill, Robert and Jill’s parents. We meet up once a month or so at one of two restaurants in Deep Ellum because both have half-priced specials on Tuesdays: Monica’s Aca Y Alla and the Allgood Cafe. Tonight we ended up at Monica’s and I had my usual Mexican Lasagna: corn tortillas filled with corn, black beans and cheese and topped with tomato coulis and verde sauce.
Beat that for $5:

So remember how I was Foodbuzz’s 1500th subscriber on Twitter? Well they sent me my prize: a $50 Amazon gift card!!! Can you think of a better gift card to receive? You can pretty much buy anything with that. I probably should have found something food related but jumped at the opportunity to buy this, per Supermom Sammie’s recommendation. My back has been killing lately so I’m pretty dang excited about this pillow. Thanks, Foodbuzz!
I’m giving up on Brian and heading to bed with Chloe (who will not stop licking my leg… damn body lotion) and The Time Traveler’s Wife. Later kids!

Best summer childhood memory?

I loved spending weeks at a time with my cousin. She lived in Arlington at the time and to me that was like a whole different state apart from Dallas. Ha!
My best childhood summer memory involves those plastic kiddie pools. When I was little, my parents got me one at the start of every summer, and I was in it every day. Those were the days. . .
The public swimming pool was at the end of our street (still there recently redone) and our entire neighborhood “lived” there everyday for 50 cents.
Speaking of knights reminded me of “On Golden Pond” where Katherine Hepburn tells Henry Fonda in that quivering voice of hers “You are my knight in shining armor”. Love that.
My favorite memory is just the freedom of Summer and the way early evening felt, because you knew you didn’t have to go to school! Also among my favorites: the smell of sprinklers in the Summer heat, fire flies, playing outside until it got dark and our yearly trip to both Six Flags and Wet ‘n Wild (which I find repulsive now).
My Dad is in the Knights!
Cool gift from Foodbuzz! That’s awesome
I have so many childhood memories – I really have to think about this one. The first one that did come to mind was sled-riding on runner sleds down the road near my grandmother’s house. She lived in the middle of nowhere, so not a lot of traffic went through and my cousins and I would wax up the bottom of the sleds and just go down right on the icy road. One time, my cousin and I were riding the same sled (I was lying on top of her actually – quite the scene), and her brother told us a car was coming. Well, he lied. But I jumped off, rolled to the side and Marissa went headfirst into a pile of shale.
I guess that’s really not my favorite, but at the time… it was really, really funny. Mainly because Marissa was/is a huge goofball and stood up laughing after it all.
Summer = Flavor Ice freezer pops!
Hey Mama, thanks for the shout out. Let me know how you like the pillow – I swear I slept so much better once I got mine.
We used to go camping ALL the time when I was a kid. We always had such a blast. I hated waking up damp from the dew on the tent but loved the fact that we were sleeping outside.
Have a great day.
