Dallas has no shortage of places to find a good cupcake- one of the city’s many perks, in my opinion. If you’re struck with a hankering for buttercream, you have your choice of Sprinkles, Society Bakery, Tart, Dallas Affaires… even Whole Foods makes a pretty mean (all natural!) cupcake. And now we have The Cupcakery.
I’ve been meaning to check out The Cupcakery for a while now. Unfortunately, up until a month or so ago, the only DFW location was in Frisco… which, let’s be honest, might as well be Oklahoma. The only reason I go to Frisco is for IKEA, and even that is kind of a beating.
Luckily a location just opened on McKinney, right across from the Crescent. Although parking on McKinney can be touch-and-go to say the least, this is in a nice little shopping center with its own parking lot. Score.
We set out on Saturday in search of a housewarming gift and ended up at The Cupcakery. My friend Megan recently started working here as a decorator, so all the more reason to visit:
The shop is very cute- lots of pink and brown, yet still sparse and chic. There are a few little tables in case you want to stay and snack. But on to the cupcakes…
The first thing you’ll notice is how darn adorable these things are. No plain-frosted tops here. Every flavor is garnished colorful icing, fruit, edible glitter, sprinkles, etc. The fact that they hire cupcake decorators should give you a hint. We bought a variety pack for the housewarming gift:

I appreciated the special box that actually holds the little cakes upright. No smeared icing or greasy smudges here. Of course we had to try some for ourselves:
I got Strawberry Shortcake and Brian chose Bugsy (carrot).
Verdict? Delicious!! The cake part is much more moist than anything I’ve tried from Sprinkles, and not too sweet either. Buttercream is sweet enough on it’s own- the cake doesn’t need to compete.
The frosting is thick and RICH. The pink part had a strong strawberry flavor and the white part was vanilla. My only complaint was that the pink frosting may have been a little too overwhelming. The cake had enough strawberry flavor that the plain vanilla (or even a cream cheese) frosting would have been the perfect foil. I had a bite of Brian’s cupcake, too. It was perfect.
So there you have it. I can’t wait to go back and try a few other flavors (Megan reports that the chocolate buttercream is pretty much to-die-for)!
