Jack has been a total rockstar today. First of all, he actually napped… THREE TIMES. Only for about 30 minutes each, but still. Progress. And he’s been in a great mood (probably thanks to actually sleeping- y’know, that thing that babies are supposed to do). Thanks to the naps I was able to eat three hot meals. As a matter of fact, Brian and I are both eating dinner- at the same time- and catching up on 30 Rock reruns. Hath hell officially frozen over?
This morning I zapped some oats in the microwave after discovering an almost empty jar of almond butter. It pays to never clean out your fridge, kids.
I topped the oats with some Post Great Grains cereal (it’s pretty close to granola). The oats weren’t great, sadly; the almond butter was kind of gritty.
Around 1, Jack and I headed to Target for some dinner supplies. My pre-shopping snack:
So today I tested out this baby:
The Titan Peeler. Our local news had a “celebrity chef” (Blythe Beck) test it out the other day and as soon as I saw how easily it peeled a butternut squash I was SOLD. Now if it would only cut and seed as well. It was about $15 at Bed Bath and Beyond.
Tonight I used it to peel a bunch of parsnips. It. Is. Amazing. Parsnips are all kinds of awkward to peel and I got 6 of them done in just a couple of minutes. I’m a little afraid of the Titan though- it’s super sharp. I almost caught my fingernail a couple times. The parsnips were for the parsnip fries from Veganomicon.
They’re a lot like sweet potato fries. Not bad.
Along with the parsnip fries, I marinated a skirt steak for a couple of hours using this recipe from Alton Brown, then cooked it on our grill pan.
And finally, remember the blood orange I bought at Central Market last week?
It went into a salad with baby lettuces and artichoke hearts, topped with Annie’s Woodstock.
Not a bad dinner! I’m definitely trying the Alton Brown marinade again. It was really easy and gave the steak a great sweet-salty flavor.
Off to bathe the kiddo and hopefully order some birth announcements. Hope everyone had a good Monday!

Alton Brown has some really great recipes. That guy knows his sh*t.
I saw that peeler on TV and thought it couldn’t possible work that well
A blood orange? I didn’t know they existed! That’s crazy!
yay for the naps from jack!
and ohhhhh…blood orange! i’ve never tried one!
I have a serious addiction to mojo bars… mmmm!
