Sticks & Stones

Oh so the fun just NEVER ENDS around here! I hate to be such a Debbie Downer lately, but it’s been a little crazy. First Jack has his little hand-foot-mouth outbreak- which seems to have resolved itself, thank goodness. He’s back home now and the bumps have all but disappeared. He’s back to his adorably naughty self.

Right after Isla was born, I started waking up in the middle of the night with what I thought was heartburn. I would take a few Tums, it would hurt for a while and then go away. Well it started happening more frequently and the Tums were doing nothing. The pain was getting worse, too, and lasting longer. It’s this really sharp pain in my upper abdomen that would wrap around to my back- it got so bad that I was literally dry heaving. The worst episode happened after dinner on Thursday and lasted for 2 hours. Like ungodly, horrible pain worse than anything I’ve ever experienced. We were literally packing bags to head to the ER when it finally stopped.

SO. After visiting with my OBGYN, then my general practitioner, then finally a gastroenterologist, I ended up having a sonogram on Thursday and then an upper GI scan on Friday (with the gross, gross barium drink that almost got spewed all over the radiologist). The gastroenterologist called me at 7pm Friday evening- never a good sign. Guess what?? Gallstones! Hooray! Apparently this is really common during and after pregnancy, something about extra estrogen and pressure on the gallbladder.

The tummy doc gave us the names of a couple of surgeons with instructions to call on Monday… so it looks like I will be heading in for my 2nd abdominal surgery in 2 months. Going for a record here; maybe he can remove my appendix and give me a tummy tuck at the same time?? Just being proactive. Anyway, it definitely sucks and I’m not at all excited about yet another surgery now that I’m finally starting to feel like myself after the c-section (not to mention the fact that we have a newborn and a 2 year old at home). Not sure when they’ll schedule the surgery so in the meantime I’m pumping like crazy to have a stockpile for Isla.

That’s probably way more than you wanted to know about my innards, but as you know I like oversharing with you guys. I’ve been able to keep the pain under control for the most part this weekend by eliminating dairy, alcohol and anything even slightly greasy/fatty. And thankfully I have a nice little supply of painkillers left over from the c-section.

So there you have it… I’ll keep you posted as I know more.

On a happier note- and so I don’t feel totally and completely depressing- Birchbox this month was fabulous, I finished my book this weekend (SO GOOD but definitely a tearjerker) and started another, and Isla slept two 5 hour stretches last night. Holla!

  1. So sorry to hear it, Heather. :( My mom has had the same problem in the past and I’ve had GI issues of my own, so I know exactly how much fun it is (as in, absolutely not). I’m thinking of you but am glad to hear Jack is better and that Isla is getting her beauty sleep!

Gosh WHAT BETTER TIME! So sorry you’re going through this H, such a drag and sounds very uncomfortable. The universe must think you are really strong because it’s serving it up! You’re on my heart lover! xo

Oh dang! That sucks, lady…but at least they were able to figure out what it was, you know?Between 2 c-sections and ankle surgery, I definitely know how much surgery sucks (especially when you have littles). Will it be laparoscopic? Wishing you a speedy recovery!
