Poor little Jackster has been fighting a nasty cough this weekend. He’s still in a great mood and seems to be feeling fine apart from the cough, but it sounds pretty rough. In light of that we decided to play it cool and have a low-key weekend. We had our standard Mexican food fix on Friday night, ran errands and grabbed Thai takeout on Saturday, then slept in today and headed to my parents’ house for dinner.

SO, not a whole lot to report. Rather than leave you with the usual cooking/food post, I thought I’d share a few things that are key to my survival these days. Get ready, it’s a random assortment.

First up: Morning coffee. My coffee consumption has doubled since Isla’s arrival. I know, I know, not awesome for breastfeeding, but I have a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon- nothing crazy. Isla is taking forever to fall asleep lately and still wakes up at least once during the night, so caffeine is pretty crucial. Every morning I look forward to this:

Donut Shop + Sugar-Free Salted Caramel Torani (from World Market). Yeah, it would be GREAT if I could hit up Starbucks every morning, but both the cost and the effort of getting 2 babies loaded up in the car are so not worth it. I have a nice little stockpile of Torani syrups- Pumpkin Pie, Brown Sugar Cinnamon- but this is by far my fave (notice the empty bottle).

Speaking of stockpiles:

I’ve said it before, but I’m not really a tea person. However, I AM a snack-at-night person and these definitely help with that. Plus, you know I’m a sucker for any holiday themed food/beverage items. I’m gradually making my way through these, but the Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice Rooibos is pretty awesome.

Now on to the beauty front. I’ve come to the realization that if I want to feel like a human being it’s really important for me to get up, brush my hair and actually put on some form of makeup in the morning (if you think that’s a given, you obviously don’t have kids). These have become lifesavers:

Beauty Balms. I know they’re all the rage right now, but in case you’re unfamiliar they’re essentially primer + sunscreen + tinted moisturizer + concealer in one. I usually just slather on a pea-sized dollop and then dust with powder foundation. It takes less than 2 minutes. These are both good but the Too Faced version offers a few shades while the Dr. Jart is one color fits all. And know that you’re not going to get a ton of coverage from them, which can be good or bad. I personally hate that caked-on foundation feeling so these are perfect.

NEXT. Lips. Mine get really chapped so I’m constantly slathering on some kind of lip product:

The Lush Sweet Lips is essentially just a pot of brown sugar that you use to scrub all of the flakies off your lips… BUT it tastes like chocolate chip cookies! And then you just lick the sugar off afterward. Yum. I do this every morning and then coat with the tiny, adorable tub of cocoa butter Vaseline (word on the street is that Vaseline is supposed to release a rose version soon- a la Smith’s Rosebud Salve). The combo makes your lips look all full and pretty-like. I love a lot of the Yes to Carrots products, and these little tinted balms are perfect because they are super moisturizing and give a tiny bit of color… the plum is my favorite.

And finally, these babies:

We tear through these Johnson’s Wipes like nobody’s business. I use them for hands, faces and bums in a pinch. The package is compact and snaps closed so they never dry out. I’ve seriously considered buying by the case, but right now I find them cheapest at the drugstore section of Bed Bath & Beyond (weird, I know).

Thanks for indulging me & my random post! This gal has her 4 month check up tomorrow:

I’m pretty excited to see how she’s measuring up in terms of weight/height. I just love her little leg rolls and chubby cheeks.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!
