The Birthday Miracle

Wow, what a weekend! So our ice storm most definitely did hit on Thursday night. Dallas was basically at a standstill pretty much all weekend. Brian stayed home on Friday and I think we ALL had cabin fever by noon. We are not homebodies (and by WE I mean ME), but we hung out in our pj’s, watched movies and ate lots of junk. By Friday afternoon Brian and I started getting nervous about Jack’s birthday party, which was scheduled for Saturday morning. We both called the LH Rec Center on Thursday to discuss inclement weather scenarios and spoke to multiple people who assured us that, “The rec center NEVER closes. We will definitely be open on Saturday.”

So we call on Friday to make sure they’re open. No answer. Brian decides to brave the icy roads and actually drives up there. The rec center is closed, no sign on the door with any info, who to call, etc. He finally gets on the City of Dallas TWITTER page (good lord) and sees that all rec centers are closed and will *tentatively* open at 10am Saturday. Jack’s party is scheduled for 9am.

At this point I’m pretty much hyperventilating because I do NOT want to tell my 4 year old that his party is off. I also do not want to spend yet another day stuck in the house. So Brian gets on the phone and basically saves the day by calling our local trampoline park, Jump Street. Apparently almost all of their Saturday parties have cancelled, so they can fit us in at 10:30 Saturday morning.

So at 6pm Friday night I’m emailing and texting 30 friends to tell them that both the time AND location have changed. And then we just prayed that anyone would actually show up.

Y’all. It was amazing. Almost everyone who had originally RSVP’d came and it was a blast. I seriously wanted to cry and hug everyone for braving the weather to help make Jack’s day. We have the most amazing friends and I am eternally grateful to each and every one of them. (And it’s a good thing we made the decision to move the party, because the rec center never did open on Saturday).

Bonus to an ice-pocalypse birthday? We pretty much had the entire place to ourselves.

This one of Isla just makes me laugh… she had fun, I promise!

So I’d call that a big birthday success!! Jack had a fabulous time and as a bonus the kids got to bounce off all of their pent up ice storm energy. Win!

Awww, I am so happy to read that! I thought of y’all on Saturday, but feared the worst. I’m so glad it all worked out, and Jack got to have his special day! I wish we didn’t live so far, and could’ve been there too. I am SO over this ice. The roads are awful up here, and I feel like there is no end in sight. If Caden doesn’t have school on Tuesday, I might have a nervous breakdown!
