And We’re Down

Isla climbed into my bed at 5 this morning complaining of a headache and burning up with a 102 degree fever. I took her in to the pediatrician and she tested positive for flu B. Ughhhh when is this season going to be over?? Since December, we’ve had strep, stomach bug, now flu- and that’s just Isla, poor thing. Since she seemed to have a pretty mild case (as evidenced by her nonstop talking and wrestling match when it was time to swab her nose… I had to climb underneath the exam table and literally drag her out), the doctor advised against Tamiflu. She said that kids Isla’s age sometimes have pretty nasty side effects from it, so she just recommended rest and lots of fluids. Her fever has climbed to as high as 103 this afternoon, but ibuprofen seems to be pretty effective at bringing it down. Also, can I just say that chewable fever reducers are a godsend??

She took a really long nap this afternoon, so I managed to throw dinner in the crock pot while she slept: low-carb taco soup.

Ingredients- 2 lbs sausage (I used breakfast sausage), 1 lb cream cheese, 2 cans ro-tel, 4 cups chicken broth, taco seasoning.

You brown the sausage, drain the grease, then add the meat to the crock pot. Add in the other ingredients (I cubed the cream cheese), stir and cook on high for 2 hours.

It was really good! Also LOTS leftover for lunches this week, which is perfect since it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting out of the house much.

Jack has a Cub Scout banquet tomorrow, and it includes a cake decorating contest. He and Brian made this campfire cake tonight and it is SO DANG CUTE. I had zero involvement in this- they melted Jolly Ranchers and butterscotch in the oven for the flames, toasted the marshmallows on the stove, arranged those pirouette cookies for logs.

Off to Lysol the entire house. Night!
