My carbon footprint is just a wee bit smaller now! I picked up my new car last night and I LOVE it. As anticipated, it was a little bittersweet telling the 4Runner goodbye (I had to clean out 10 years worth of random junk before I left it at the dealership).  The salesman probably thought I was nuts, but he was so sweet and even emailed me a photo of my old truck.

The new car is awesome.  I’d only heard good things about the Prius but I had no idea how cool it actually is.  I’m not really a gadget person, but this car is FULL of them.  There’s a touchscreen on the dash that shows you if you’re running off battery or gas, displays a backup camera, controls the radio and air, and other coolness that I haven’t even figured out yet.  The smart key is pretty sweet, too; no more digging in my bottomless purse for keys.  And most importantly– I’m not going to fill up twice a week, the car doesn’t shake, and it’s probably not going to catch on fire. Nice.

I haven’t taken a photo yet, but this is what it looks like:

So yeah, so far I’m not missing the SUV at all. If anyone’s looking into a hybrid I would definitely recommend this one!

I’m sad to say that I’ve lost a very dear friend; one that has been through so many milestones with me: prom, graduation, college, first job, wedding (she was there in spirit)… my little 4Runner has died :(

The car was 13 years old, so I knew this was coming. But how do you ever truly prepare? Anyway, I was driving to work yesterday and the car started shaking (not that unusual), and then not really accelerating.  I was on the Tollway so this was a problem.  I noticed that the temperature gauge was in the red and thankfully managed to make it to a 7-Eleven, at which point the car began smoking. A lot.   I walked to the opposite side of the parking lot, not out of concern for my safety- I was fairly certain that the car wasn’t on fire- but because I wanted to distance myself from the smoldering  SUV and the embarrassing stares it attracted.  Brian came and rescued me. We added oil and coolant, but no such luck.  Apparently something with the radiator and head gasket. I have no idea what this means, but Brian patiently explained that it’s a “shoot the car” situation.

So I guess we’re car shopping this weekend. Which is partially exciting and partially scary-as-hell since we’ve never had to deal with a car payment.

I wish I had a pic of my trusty 4Runner to post, but I don’t.  Here’s a reasonable facsimile.  Just picture this but a lot dirtier and with a busted antenna:

OH- and my mom drove me to work this morning. Yes, I am that cool.
